At Burtonwood CP School, we are committed to nurturing every child's potential, equipping them with the skills and mindset needed for lifelong success. High Performance Learning (HPL) is an evidence-based approach that helps children develop the cognitive (ACPs – Advanced Cognitive Performance Characteristics) and personal (VAAs – Values, Attitudes, and Attributes) skills necessary for high achievement.

Why HPL Matters in Primary School

Developing ACPs and VAAs from a young age encourages children to become confident, resilient, and independent learners. ACPs help children think critically, problem-solve, and apply knowledge in different contexts, while VAAs nurture the personal qualities needed to thrive, such as perseverance, curiosity, and empathy. By embedding these skills into our teaching, we prepare our students not only for academic success but also for life beyond school.

HPL and Our School Values

HPL aligns closely with our core school values:

  • Be Prepared – Encouraging children to be proactive, responsible learners who are ready to take on challenges.
  • Be Engaged – Fostering curiosity and enthusiasm for learning through active participation.
  • Be Brave – Promoting resilience, risk-taking, and a positive mindset when facing new challenges.
  • Be Respectful – Developing empathy, kindness, and collaboration in all aspects of school life.

How We Promote HPL in School

To ensure HPL is embedded in daily school life, we:

  • Focus on a weekly ACP or VAA – This is introduced in assembly and reinforced in lessons, discussions, and through positive recognition at the end of the week.
  • Celebrate HPL in Action – Parents are encouraged to share examples of their child demonstrating HPL skills at home or in the community. These stories are featured in our school newsletter to highlight real-world applications of HPL.
  • Embed HPL in Lessons – Our curriculum is mapped to ensure that children not only learn subject knowledge but also develop how to think and how to behave using the language of HPL.
  • HPL-Based Homework – Weekly homework tasks are designed to reinforce the HPL focus, helping children practice these essential skills outside the classroom.

Looking Ahead

More details about our mapped-out curriculum linking HPL and our school values will be shared soon. Together, we can inspire our children to achieve their full potential and develop the skills they need for success in school and beyond.
