Year 5 Take on SafetyQuest at Safety Central

Following on from Year 2’s visit to Safety Central, it was now Year 5’s turn to take part in this hands-on learning experience. While Year 2 focused on key safety messages for younger children, Year 5 explored a more in-depth programme designed especially for Key Stage 2 pupils.  Year 5 had a great day where they explored important safety topics through interactive and hands-on learning.

The day began with an engaging quiz to find out what the children already knew about staying safe. Working in teams, the pupils then rotated around 10 safety zones, each focused on a key aspect of everyday safety and wellbeing. These included:

  • Fire safety – learning how to prevent fires and what to do in an emergency

  • Home safety – spotting hazards in a realistic home setup

  • Rail safety – understanding how to stay safe near trains and platforms

  • Road safety – learning how to be safe as a pedestrian and passenger

  • Electric safety – recognising dangers around electricity

  • Water safety – staying safe near rivers, lakes and pools

  • Anti-social behaviour – understanding actions and their consequences

  • Shop Sense – visiting a mock Co-op store to learn about healthy eating and the risks of vaping

  • Cyberbullying – staying safe online and being kind in the digital world

Throughout the day, pupils built on their classroom learning from PSHE, science, computing, and English by applying their knowledge in real-life scenarios. Whether it was identifying hidden dangers in a kitchen, understanding the importance of bike helmets, or practising how to make a 999 call, the children embraced every activity.

The day ended with a final quiz to reflect on everything they had discovered, reinforcing their understanding of how to stay safe at home, in school, and out in the community.

The SafetyQuest programme not only helped our Year 5s deepen their understanding of safety but also gave them the confidence to assess risk and make smart choices in their everyday lives.

Well done, Year 5 — we hope you’ll continue to share what you’ve learned and help raise awareness about how to stay safe at home, at school, and in the wider community.
