Year 5 Science – Mixtures and Separating

In Science, Year 5 have been learning about mixtures and how they can be separated. To explore this, they took part in a gold mining activity. The mixture was made from salt, sugar, and small metal pieces.

First, the class used sieving to separate the larger metal from the finer grains. Then they used magnets to remove the metal pieces from the mixture.

This practical activity showed how materials can be separated using their different properties, such as size and magnetism.
