Year 4 DT – Strong and Safe Paper Mâché Helmets

Year 4 have been busy learning all about structures and strength in DT. Their challenge was to design and create their very own paper mâché helmets, thinking carefully about how to make them strong, durable, and safe, just like real cycling helmets.

They began by shaping their basic helmet using balloons before adding layers of paper mâché. They quickly discovered that one layer wasn’t enough to make a strong structure, so they experimented with adding additional layers to improve the helmet’s strength and stability. They discussed how extra layers would help to absorb impact and make the finished product more secure.

Year 4 have shown great creativity and problem-solving skills, and have also gained a great understanding of how everyday safety equipment is designed to keep us safe.

Well done, Year 4, we can't wait to see the finished designs!
