Year 6 Science: Periscopes and Light

Year 6 have been learning about light and how it travels, linking their science work to history. As part of this topic, the children explored periscopes and how they were used by soldiers during the war to see above the trenches while staying safe.

Soldiers in the trenches could not stand up to look over the top, so periscopes were used to help them see what was happening without being seen. A periscope uses mirrors placed at an angle inside a tube. Light reflects off the first mirror, travels down the tube, and then reflects off a second mirror into the viewer’s eyes.

They made their own periscopes and learned that light travels in straight lines and can be reflected. By placing the mirrors at the correct angle, the light can be redirected, allowing someone to see over obstacles or around corners. The children investigated how changing the angle of the mirrors affects what can be seen.

Year 6 enjoyed making and testing their own periscopes, developing their understanding of reflection while solving practical problems. This hands-on activity helped them see how science is used in real life and how it links to history.
