Year 6 Bring DT Life in Willow Wood

Year 6 pupils have been putting their Design and Technology skills into action as part of their Structures unit, taking on a real-life project to enhance our Willow Wood area.

After helping to tidy and prepare the space, pupils were challenged to design and begin building their own play apparatus, bringing their creative ideas to life during outdoor DT sessions in the sunshine. The project has provided a fantastic opportunity for children to apply classroom learning in a practical and meaningful way while contributing to the development of our outdoor environment.

Using a range of tools and materials, pupils have been developing key woodworking skills, learning how to measure, mark, cut and shape wood accurately. Alongside this, they have explored how structures can be strengthened through thoughtful design and the manipulation of materials and shapes.

It has been wonderful to see the children’s confidence and problem-solving skills grow as they transform their designs into sturdy, functional structures. Their teamwork, creativity and determination have been evident throughout the project.

This exciting work is helping to develop not only practical DT skills, but also resilience, collaboration and innovation, and we look forward to seeing their play apparatus continue to take shape in the weeks ahead.
