Year 4 Students Innovate with Digital Timer Project in Design Technology
Pupils in Year 4 have embarked on an exciting project in their Design Technology class, creating digital timers for mindfulness sessions. The initiative, which combines programming, teamwork, and creative design, has seen young learners developing a product that promotes mental well-being.
As part of the project, students were tasked with designing a timer for teachers to use during a two-minute mindfulness moment. The process began with students experimenting to determine the optimal time required to create a calming and effective mindfulness session. Armed with this data, they moved on to the technical phase of the project.
Using Micro, a small programmable device, the students created their digital timers. This hands-on experience with coding and electronics provided a practical application of their prior learning from a unit on Scratch, another programming platform they had previously explored.
In addition to the technical aspects, the project emphasised the HPL values, collaboration and creative thinking. Students worked in teams to brainstorm and present their ideas.
The project also highlighted key skills such as strategy planning and seeing alternative perspectives. By connecting new concepts with prior knowledge, the students were able to create a product that meets the needs of their users.
This innovative approach to learning has not only equipped the students with technical skills but also fostered important life skills such as empathy, collaboration, and strategic thinking. The Year 4 students are proud of their achievements and are eager to see their timers in action.
Well done Year 4!
