Year 5 Scientists Explore Mixtures and Solutions

Year 5 students at Burtonwood Community Primary School put on their scientist caps last week as they delved into the fascinating world of chemistry during an engaging science lesson. The young experimenters took a hands-on approach to investigate how everyday substances interact when mixed with water.

Armed with a selection of materials—including sand, sugar, flour, food colouring and tea leaves, the students set out to test which substances would dissolve to form a solution and which would leave behind solid remnants.

The class discovered that sugar dissolved seamlessly, turning the water into a sweet solution, while sand and tea leaves refused to disappear, leaving solid particles floating in the liquid. Flour created a cloudy suspension, and the food colouring added colour, yet still remained a true solution.

The lesson was a fun, hands-on experience and the experiments helped Year 5 to understand the differences between mixtures and solutions.
