Year 5 Bikeability

Our Year 5 children recently enjoyed taking part in the Bikeability programme, an excellent cycle training initiative designed to develop important skills both on and off the bike.

Qualified instructors came into school to lead the sessions, helping pupils build confidence and improve their cycling ability. The day began on the playground, where children practised essential bike handling and control skills in a safe environment. In the afternoon, they took to local roads to put these new skills into practice in real-life situations. Our HPL value of “Realising - Automatically” was evident throughout, as pupils became increasingly confident and their cycling skills became more instinctive, enabling them to focus on road awareness and safe decision-making.

Bikeability offers many wider benefits beyond learning to cycle safely. The programme promotes independence, supports well-being, develops social confidence, and encourages children to assess and respond to risks effectively. Following the training, many pupils feel more confident about cycling regularly, including travelling to and from school, which also contributes positively to both physical and mental health.

The programme has once again been a valuable and enjoyable experience for Year 5, providing children with practical lifelong skills that they can continue to use in the future.

Well done to all of Year 5, and thank you to the instructors for delivering such engaging and supportive sessions.
