Year 6 Step Back in Time at RAF Burtonwood Heritage Centre
Year 6 Step Back in Time at RAF Burtonwood Heritage Centre
Year 6 enjoyed an educational visit to the RAF Burtonwood Heritage Centre, where they had the opportunity to explore wartime Britain and discover more about the important role RAF Burtonwood played during World War II.
The children were warmly welcomed by the Heritage Centre volunteers, who shared their knowledge and brought history to life through fascinating stories, historical artefacts and interactive activities. The visit helped the children develop a deeper understanding of how the war affected people both across Britain and within their local community in Warrington.
During the day, the children took part in a range of presentations and activities, each exploring a different aspect of wartime life. These included:
-
Life on the Home Front - discovering how families and communities coped with the challenges of war, including air raids and the need to support one another.
-
Evacuees - learning about the experiences of children who were sent away from their homes to stay in safer areas.
-
Rationing - finding out how food and other essential resources were rationed, with opportunities to handle wartime ration cards.
-
The War's Impact on Warrington - exploring how the conflict affected local people and the surrounding area.
-
The Berlin Airlift - learning about the remarkable operation to deliver food and fuel to West Berlin following World War II.
Working in smaller groups, the children explored each activity and had the chance to ask questions, share their thoughts and make connections with their learning in the classroom.
The visit provided a valuable opportunity for Year 6 to deepen their historical knowledge and appreciate how national and local events shaped the lives of people during and after the war.
A fascinating day was had by all, and we would like to thank the volunteers at RAF Burtonwood Heritage Centre for sharing their time, knowledge and enthusiasm with the children.
