Year 5 Students Explore Motorised Movement in Design and Technology Lesson

In an engaging Year 5 Design and Technology lesson, pupils took a closer look at the fascinating role of motors in everyday products. By examining a range of motorised devices, such as a record player, an electric mixer, and an electric fan, students discovered how motors generate movement, turning energy into motion that powers these devices.

The lesson encouraged students to use the HPL attribute of critical thinking to discover how products work. After exploring the motorised items, they brainstormed alternatives that rely on different types of movement, including hand-cranked or manually powered items. This sparked lively discussions on how various products are designed to achieve similar results without the need for electricity or a motor.

This practical experience with motors and movement lays the foundation for their upcoming Design and Technology projects. In the next few lessons, Year 5 will take what they've learned and apply it to their own creations by designing and building a unique product powered by an electrical circuit and a motor. We are excited to see what inventive ideas they come up with as they develop their skills in design and engineering.
